Fire Hydrants

Homeowner Responsibility

Do you own or rent a property that has a fire hydrant? It’s important to keep the fire hydrant on your property accessible and visible at all times, even during the winter. Any delays in opening a hydrant delays our response time.

The minimum clearance in all directions (360°) around and above a public or private fire hydrant is 1.5 m (5 ft.) from any obstructions, including, but not limited to, fences, shrubs, trees, large rocks, or signs.

Please check your fire hydrant to ensure you are in compliance with Fire Prevention Bylaw No. 10-37, Section 413. Failure to adhere to the bylaw may result in a $250 fine.

Hydrant Flow Testing

Each spring, Kamloops Fire Rescue inspects the City's fire hydrants, conducting flow tests to ensure they are operating properly and have adequate flow.

The program runs from 9:00 am–8:00 pm, seven days a week from mid-March to mid-May.

During flow testing, poor water pressure and/or high turbidity levels may result. This situation is temporary and may last up to four hours. If turbidity is detected, you are advised to run a cold water tap and avoid doing laundry until the turbidity clears up.

Please assist us by keeping shrubs and trees pruned back from fire hydrants.
