All land within Kamloops boundaries is assigned a zone which specifies how a property may be developed and used. The City's Zoning Bylaw regulates the location and use of buildings, the use of lands, the height of structures, areas for open spaces, size of properties, lot coverage, principal and accessory building areas and heights, and location of development on individual lots. Therefore, when building on your property, you must take all applicable zoning regulations into consideration.
The City of Kamloops is in the final stage of updating its zoning bylaw, which was last updated in 2001. The Zoning Bylaw Review and Update process will replace existing Zoning Bylaw No. 5-1-2001 with proposed Zoning Bylaw No. 55. The updated bylaw aims to be more clear, user-friendly, and business-friendly than the existing bylaw; to implement policies of KAMPLAN(External link)—the City's Official Community Plan—and other guiding documents; and to implement best practices in the areas of planning, sustainability, and accessibility.
