The Canada Games Aquatic Centre was constructed to host the 1993 Canada Summer Games. Following the Games, leisure amenities were added (hot tubs, leisure pool), and in 2007, the Canada Games Aquatic Centre became part of the new Tournament Capital Centre, which itself achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification at the time of construction.

Efficiency Features and Improvements

In 2020, the then 28-year-old Canada Games Aquatic Centre received significant improvements, including a new roof and building envelope, upgrades to the mechanical, electrical, lighting, boilers, and HVAC system. The pool change rooms were modernized, and the original hot tubs, sauna, and steam room were replaced and relocated. 

The City’s budget for the project was $13.5 million, including contributions from the federal ($1.3 million) and provincial ($1.1 million) governments. The grant monies helped fund a bundle of high-performance energy efficiency upgrades, including a new heat recovery system that captures waste heat from the ventilation system and injects it back into the facility’s heating system. As a result, the pool’s greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by 41%!
