The City of Kamloops is thrilled to announce the opening of the newly upgraded accessible water park at Albert McGowan Park—a vibrant community amenity partially funded through a contribution from the Canada Community-Building Fund.
This project was part of the multi-phased Albert McGowan Park Upgrades Project. Phase one, completed in November 2024, included new accessible play features, shade structures, and soft rubber surfacing for the renovated playground, ensuring a safe and inclusive space for children of all abilities.
Phase two, which began in March 2025, replaced the aging water park with colourful new water features, modern surfacing, and a recirculating water system, a growing best practice for water conservation.
“This project is about more than just upgrades. It’s about creating a space where everyone can come together to play, cool off, and feel welcome,” said Jeff Putnam, the City’s Parks and Streets Manager. “By investing in inclusive and sustainable facilities, we’re building parks for the future.”
Water park recirculation systems are the gold standard in water park design across North America, maximizing water conservation while providing a safe and enjoyable experience for water park enthusiasts. The new system at Albert McGowan Park treats and reuses water throughout the day. A small amount of water is released during daily cleaning cycles, but in keeping with best practices, this water is directed to the sewer, as it is treated similarly to swimming pool water.
The water park is now open daily from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. Due to forecasted temperatures, all City water parks will remain open until Sunday, September 7.
Other amenities found in the award-winning park include the Hal Rogers Activity Centre, slo-pitch fields, mini soccer fields, washrooms, change room facilities, a water fountain, and free parking.
