Keep your eyes out for more refreshing public amenities for residents with the installation of new outdoor misting stations, drinking fountains, and water bottle refill stations. These new amenities are designed to bring additional cooling options to the places where Kamloops residents work, walk, and play.

This initiative is part of the City’s Extreme Heat Response Plan (2024), which outlines how Kamloops can better prepare for hotter, longer summers while keeping people safe—especially those most vulnerable to extreme temperatures.

“This is one of those rare projects that’s both fun and functional,” said Glen Cheetham, the City’s Climate and Sustainability Manager. “It’s about making our city more livable during the hot summer months, while also helping us adapt to the realities of climate change.”

“With heat events becoming more frequent, this investment helps ensure Kamloops is prepared—and staying cool in the process.”

City Council approved the installation of new public cooling amenities over three years, funded by the City’s Climate Action Fund Reserve—which consists of revenue from the Government of BC’s Local Government Climate Action Program. The Local Government Climate Action Program supports actions that reduces emissions and prepares communities for the impacts of a changing climate.

Where You’ll Find Them

Find the new misting stations at the North Shore Transit Exchange and on McArthur Island Park (near the skateboard park and soccer fields 5 and 6). Water refill stations have also been installed at McArthur Island Park at the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association building near the mini-golf course and at the centre concession building.

The evaporative cooling effect of misters has been shown to help people cope with extreme heat by lowering the body temperature quickly, helping to prevent heat-related health issues.

Whether you're out shopping, catching a bus, or enjoying a community event, these stations will offer a quick, refreshing, and welcome cool down.
