The City of Kamloops has launched a City of Kamloops - Lost and Found Animals Facebook page dedicated to sharing information about lost and found animals that are in the care of Community Services.
Animals are held for up to four days on a mandatory stray hold (four days for dogs/two days for cats) to allow owners time to reclaim them. After this period, Community Services will post the animal on the City’s Lost and Found Animals Facebook page to help reunite pets with their families. If unclaimed, the animal will remain in care for up to one additional week. After that, efforts to reunite the animal with its owner will continue while exploring permanent placement options through adoption or collaboration with rescue facilities.
If you believe an animal belongs to you, please contact Community Services directly at 250-828-3409 or email communityservices@kamloops.ca. The Facebook page will not be monitored to respond to messages.
To claim your pet, you must:
- Provide proof of ownership (e.g. adoption paperwork, vet records, microchip/tattoo information, or licence)
- Present government-issued photo ID
- Purchase a dog licence if your pet is unlicensed
- Pay associated impound/boarding fees, as outlined in Dog Responsibility and Control Bylaw No. 34-42
- Bring a leash and collar or a secure pet carrier
If you find a lost pet, we ask that efforts be made to find the animal’s owner before calling Community Services. Most lost pets are found very close to home and have a higher likelihood of being reunited with their family if they remain in the neighbourhood.
If you have found an animal:
- Check for tags or identification if it is safe to do so
- Ask neighbours if they recognize the animal
- Post a photo and location on social media or neighbourhood forums
- Visit a local vet to scan for a microchip if it is safe to do so
If you're unable to reunite the pet with its owner, contact Community Services or submit a found animal report by phone, email, or Kamloops.ca/CSRequest.
The community is encouraged to follow the new City of Kamloops Lost and Found Animals Facebook page for updates and to share posts to help reunite a missing pet quickly. Learn more at Kamloops.ca/LostandFound.
