A boulevard is the area between the street edge or curb and the front property line of a lot (see sketch to the left). For corner lots, the boulevard also includes the area between the curb and the side lot line. Some properties also have laneways in the back for ease of servicing.

The adjacent property owner.

Boulevards and laneway edges should compliment the landscaping on adjacent properties. Generally, this includes grass, trees, plants, and flowers or a combination of these materials.
Property owners are responsible for general upkeep and maintenance which includes:

• litter pickup on a regular basis
• sweeping and snow removal of all sidewalks
• watering and fertilizing grass, trees, and other landscaping plants
• mowing and trimming the grass
• weed control

Property owners are not permitted to place and hard surfaces (i.e. asphalt, concrete, paving bricks) on the boulevard and laneways except for their own driveway allowance, which keeps these areas more attractive and safe for everyone. Remember, laneways are used for solid waste pickup so they must be kept clear so the trucks can collect garbage and recycling safely and efficiently.

Garbage and recycling containers must not be stored in the laneway. Please keep your containers on your property between collection days.

The City of Kamloops has professional arborists who are responsible for all pruning and maintenance of our street trees. Property owners should ensure trees on the boulevard are adequately watered and they should report any health or safety problems to the City of Kamloops Parks Division as soon as possible.

If a lot has a street in front and behind, there is usually a boulevard between the street edge or curb and the lot lines (see sketch above). This is common when a driveway is accessed from a cul-de-sac and the backyard has another street behind it. Often, these boulevards are neglected by adjacent property owners because they are behind fences and are not readily seen.
