Waste Diversion Stations at City Events a Success

With in-person events returning to the community this year, the City has begun to use waste diversion stations at some City-sponsored events. The waste stations include receptacles to separate garbage, recycling, liquids, and organic waste (i.e. food scraps, soiled paper plates, and napkins).

To help with the sorting, the waste stations are supported by a City ECOSmart Team member and event volunteers. Last weekend’s Ribfest had 18 sorting stations, 7 of which had volunteers to assist with sorting. At Ribfest, 16,200 kg of waste was diverted from the event, with only 1,800 kg going to the landfill (90% diversion). During the Canada Day event in Riverside Park, 790 kg of waste was diverted and 500 kg was sent to the landfill (60% diversion).

Thank you to all of the visitors who took advantage of using the waste diversion stations at these recent events.
