Bridging Communities, Inspiring Change: Kamloops and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc Partner for Two Transformative Conferences

In October, Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops came together in the spirit of learning and reconciliation to host two powerful conferences. The communities are committed to leading meaningful change by fostering open, honest dialogue about reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion. In a time when trust in government and media is fragile, both governments recognize the need to build confidence through transparency and collaboration. By supporting difficult conversations and prioritizing community voices, they aim to create a more just and inclusive future for everyone.

Empowering Youth Through Leadership and Connection

On Friday, October 24, 2025, the Change Makers Youth Conference welcomed youth aged 12 and up from across the region for a full-day, free event, dedicated to leadership development, cultural exchange, and reconciliation.  The conference is part of the Guns and Gangs Prevention Program of the Building Safer Communities Fund.

This second annual youth-focused event built on the previous year’s success, offering an engaging schedule packed with workshops, speakers, and team-building activities. With full attendance and enthusiastic participation, the day was a resounding success – strengthening resilience, fostering connection, and empowering young people to be change-makers in their communities.

Based on the enthusiastic response, Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City are already planning two more youth conferences in early 2026, ensuring this vital work continues to grow and inspire.

Celebrating Inclusion and Community Voices

Just days later, on October 29 and 30, 2025, the two communities hosted the Rethinking Community: Diverse Community Voices Conference, a sold-out event that invited participants to explore accessibility, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation in deep and meaningful ways.
The two-day conference brought together community leaders, public servants, private sector professionals, change-makers and representatives from the charitable sector, each entering the space with a shared commitment to respect, openness, and collaboration.

Powerful keynote addresses by Rohene Bouajram and Dr. James Makokis framed the event, inspiring reflection and collective action. Through thought-provoking sessions and honest dialogue, participants examined ways to move to meaningful, community-led change that will strengthen understanding and belonging in Kamloops, Tk̓emlupsemcúl’ecw, and beyond.

Looking Ahead

The City of Kamloops and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc are deeply encouraged by the energy and momentum generated by these events. Together, they reaffirm their commitment to transforming outdated systems and building safer, stronger, more inclusive communities that are grounded in respect, collaboration, and hope.
