The City of Kamloops recently celebrated the grand opening of its newest skatepark at Rae-Mor Park in Rayleigh.
More than just a park, the Rae-Mor Skatepark is great example of what a community can accomplish when passion and perseverance come together.
The story of the skatepark starts with two young Rayleigh residents, Owen and Merek de Witte, who saw a need for the park in their community. With the help of their aunt, Florence Ballard, the boys put in countless hours and effort gathering support for their project and working closely with City staff to make it a reality. After months of construction, the park was ready for use in early 2018 and celebrated its official grand opening with a community event in September 2018.
“If you have a great idea, and it fits the need of the community, it is possible to make it happen, you just have to put the work in. Merek and Owen are a great example of that,” said Jeff Putnam, the City's Parks and Civic Facilities Manager.
