Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 Climate Action Grant program, an initiative that supports and encourages residents, non-profit organizations, and charities to advance their ideas for community-based climate action projects.
$20,000 of the City’s Climate Action Reserve is earmarked to support grants valued at up to $2,000 each. Projects that are eligible for funding must support priority actions in the Community Climate Action Plan, have the potential to decrease community greenhouse gases, enhance community resilience to climate change and/or support a healthy urban ecosystem.
Applications must demonstrate how the proposed project will:
- provide a direct benefit to the community
- support the implementation of the Community Climate Action Plan
- improve resiliency to climate change and/or reduce GHG emissions
- foster neighbourhood pride and/or community wellness
- respect the principles of equity and climate justice
“The goal is to empower citizens and community groups with resources to deliver projects that foster a climate-friendly community,” said Jaimi Garbutt, the City’s Sustainability Educator.
The 2024 Climate Action Grant supported 14 inspiring community-led projects, each helping to build a more sustainable and resilient city. Highlights included:
- new shade trees at Aberdeen Elementary and McDonald Park
- waste reduction initiatives at Valleyview Secondary
- pollinator gardens at the BC Wildlife Park and Beattie Elementary School
- bike safety and training course at Dallas Elementary
- climate workshops hosted by Be the Change Earth Alliance
The 2025 grant recipients are currently completing their projects and will be highlighted in the new year.
