The City of Kamloops has received a $4,800 BC Healthy Communities PlanH grant to support three community initiatives aimed at increasing social connection, reducing isolation, and improving access to information and services for seniors and newcomers.

Developed with local organizations, the funded initiatives will help create new opportunities for residents to build relationships, strengthen communication connections, and confidently navigate a digital world. The initiatives will also support boarder community goals of inclusion, healthy aging, and belonging.

One grant-supported project is the launch of the Seniors and Newcomers Connection Program. This new partnership-based program will match senior volunteers with newcomers to Canada. Designed to support newcomers as they settle into the community while reducing social isolation among older adults. Participants will be matched based on shared interests, accessibility needs, and personal goals. The matches will help create opportunities for meaningful relationships, cultural exchange, and shared learning. The program is delivered in partnership with Kamloops Immigrant Services, the Kamloops and District Local Immigration Partnership, and Volunteer Kamloops.

The grant will also fund a series of Digital Literacy Workshops for seniors and newcomers. Kamloops Partner Assisted Learning and the Centre for Seniors Information will help deliver the workshops. Participants will learn how to use digital tools and services with confidence. Topics will include the Umo transportation app, artificial intelligence basics, data storage, and accessing community resources. The workshops will take place on November 17 and 24, 2026, 1:00 pm–2:00 pm at the Kamloops Seniors Community Centre. By strengthening digital literacy skills, the workshops will help participants find information, access services, and connect with others. Kamloops Partner Assisted Learning received a 2025 Social and Community Development Grant for previous digital literacy support. This year's workshops will expand on previous learning and explore new topics identified through participant interest and community needs.

A third initiative is a Community Services Expo, which will bring together senior-serving organizations, health agencies, non-profits, and community groups in one accessible location. Set to take place in early 2027, the event will provide residents with direct access to information about programs, services, resources, and volunteer opportunities available throughout Kamloops. The Expo is being organized in partnership with United Way BC and with support from the Age-Friendly Planning Table.

By bringing people together and strengthening community partnerships, the PlanH-funded initiatives will help foster a more connected, welcoming, and inclusive Kamloops where residents of all ages and backgrounds can thrive.
