More than 75 community representatives gathered today at Kenna Cartwright Park to celebrate the ceremonial groundbreaking of the arena multiplex, marking a significant milestone for one of the City's most ambitious recreation projects.
The event brought together members of Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc, representatives of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, the Integrated Project Delivery team, City staff, elected officials, MLAs, user groups, the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association, residents, supporters, and community partners who have helped shape the vision for the facility.
During the event, representatives from Coeur Mining, Inc.’s New Afton mine announced a $1 million contribution through their Community Investment Program to name one of the new ice sheets, highlighting the important role partnerships and community investment can play in advancing major projects.
As a cornerstone project of the Build Kamloops program, the arena multiplex represents a major investment in recreation, sport, and community well-being. Designed as an inclusive, ice-first facility featuring four ice sheets and flexible community gathering spaces, the multiplex will serve residents of all ages while supporting community events, tournaments, and recreational programming.
For local youth, the facility will create additional opportunities to play, compete, learn new skills, and build lifelong friendships through sport and recreation. For user groups, it means increased access to ice time and modern amenities. For visitors, it offers a welcoming destination that reflects the community's reputation for excellence in hosting major sporting events.
The multiplex will also strengthen Kamloops' standing as Canada's Tournament Capital, providing the capacity to attract and host regional, provincial, and national competitions that generate economic activity while showcasing the community to visitors from across the country.
Beyond the ice, the project is envisioned as a place where people come together. Community gathering areas and shared spaces will create opportunities for connection between residents of different ages, backgrounds, interests, and neighbourhoods.
As construction progresses over the coming years, the arena multiplex will evolve from ceremonial shovels in the ground into a flagship community destination. Expected to open by 2030, the facility will serve as a lasting investment in an active, connected, and welcoming Kamloops.
