As a longtime resident of Kamloops, I have seen firsthand how quickly our rivers can change—from calm and inviting to unpredictable and dangerous. With warmer weather drawing more residents and visitors to the Thompson Rivers, it’s critical we place safety at the forefront of every outing.

Recent collaboration between local agencies has reinforced an important message: education saves lives. Our rivers are cold, fast-moving, and influenced by fluctuating conditions. Even experienced swimmers can find themselves in distress within moments. Wearing a properly fitted lifejacket, staying within your abilities, and avoiding alcohol around water are simple decisions that make a profound difference.

We’re proud to be working alongside community partners to increase awareness, improve signage, and expand public safety education. But prevention starts with each of us. Know the risks before you head out. Check conditions, choose safe access points, and never underestimate the power of moving water.

River safety is not about limiting enjoyment—it’s about ensuring everyone returns home safely. By making informed choices and looking out for one another, we can all enjoy Kamloops’ beautiful waterways responsibly this summer.
