Prescribed Burn in Peterson Creek Nature Park to Move Forward October 22

Release Date

Tomorrow, October 22, 2026, the City of Kamloops, in partnership with BC Wildfire Service and Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc, will be intentionally applying fire to a 6 ha section of Peterson Creek Nature Park in a controlled process known as a prescribed burn. Residents should expect trail closures, smoke, air quality impacts, and emergency responders in the area.

Prescribed burning is a safe and effective way to manage land, reduce wildfire risk, protect communities and critical infrastructure, and support healthy ecosystems. Fire reduces the buildup of dead vegetation, fallen branches, and other fuels, lowering the risk of severe wildfires. Prescribed burning can also remove invasive species, return nutrients to the soil, and support plant diversity.

Ignition days for prescribed burns are carefully selected and are not confirmed until hours before the event to ensure favourable weather conditions.

The following trails will be closed when the work begins sometime between 12:00 – 5:00 pm on October 22 and will remain closed until the project is complete later the same day:

Park users are asked to obey posted trail signs and the instructions of enforcement officers on site, using discretion even on open trails. While the prescribed burn will not immediately impact some trails, smoke may reduce air quality in the area.

“We recognize that residents may experience some temporary inconvenience during the burn, and that the burn area may look different than people are used to seeing this fall and winter,” said Kathleen Cahoon, FireSmart Liaison. “However, these short-term impacts are outweighed by the long-term benefits. Prescribed burns help reduce wildfire risk, protect our community and critical infrastructure, and support healthier, more resilient ecosystems. This work is an important investment in the safety and sustainability of Peterson Creek Nature Park for years to come.”

More information on tomorrow’s prescribed burn is available in a bulletin from BC Wildfire Service and at Kamloops.ca/WildfireProtection.
