Each year, the City of Kamloops issues a call for proposals for registered charities and non-profit agencies in our community to apply for Social and Community Development Grants. These grants are intended to fund special projects, operational costs, and/or capital expenditures that address specific current social problems and/or issues related to the City’s Social Plan or the Livability and Sustainability pillar of the Council Strategic Plan.
People In Motion received a $16,000 Social and Community Development Grant in 2023. This is how the grant was used:
Submitted by People In Motion
People In Motion has a long history of working to build effective partnerships and relationships within the City of Kamloops and the broader region to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are met. This includes the introduction of the Memories In Motion initiative, which is designed to respond to gaps in the continuum of transportation choices available to individuals in the community. Funding was used to aid in bus repairs and help with wages for our coordinator to organize our bus services.
Through Memories In Motion, which is volunteer-driven and funded by donations, members of the disability community and those facing significant health-related challenges have been able to access a safe and reliable transportation service that offers door-to-door support and a sense of connection, caring, dignity, and support. Whether it is lending a helping hand to get people to a last-minute medical appointment or enabling individuals in the community to pursue activities and opportunities that are meaningful and important to them, Memories In Motion is about ensuring that transportation is not a barrier to the full and equal participation of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of community life.
