On August 6, 2026, the City hosted a candidate information session for people who wanted to learn more about serving on City Council. Nineteen people attended the session, which provided an overview of local government, the role of elected officials, and what it means to represent a community at the municipal level.
The session also gave helpful information for voters. Facilitator Christina Benty talked about how residents can take part in local decision making and contribute to building a strong, informed, and engaged community.

As a former mayor herself, Benty shared what she learned during her time with the Town of Golden and lessons from her work on many boards. She emphasized that elected officials are responsible for setting policy, strategic direction, and budgets, while City staff manage day-to-day operations and deliver services. She also noted that reducing taxes means reducing services and encouraged prospective candidates to understand the realities and responsibilities of the role before entering a campaign.
Participants also learned the importance of understanding jurisdictional responsibilities. While residents often look to Council for solutions on issues such as health care, highways, education, or housing, many of these areas fall under provincial or federal authority. Knowing where municipal responsibilities begin and end is a critical part of effective leadership.
For voters, Benty encouraged asking thoughtful questions when evaluating candidates. Residents were encouraged to ask candidates what community services they believe are underfunded, what trade-offs they would be willing to make to fund priorities, and how they understand the difference between setting policy and managing operations.
Other suggested questions included asking candidates to describe a time they changed their mind after hearing new information, how they would respond to residents who want improved services without a tax increase, and whether they understand which community issues fall within municipal jurisdiction.
As Kamloops prepares for the upcoming municipal election, residents and interested candidates are encouraged to stay informed, learn about local government, and share what matters most to them.
