The City of Kamloops is calling on residents to roll up their sleeves and join the Clean the Beach event, a community-driven initiative to keep local riverbanks clean and beautiful, on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This event closely aligns with Earth Day and is planned for a time of year when water levels are low to support safety for volunteers and to minimize ecological impact.
This family-friendly cleanup will focus on collecting litter along designated routes near Riverside Park and Overlander Park. Volunteers will receive collection materials and route maps upon arrival at Riverside Park. Collected debris will be secured in bags and placed in designated areas for City staff to remove.
While registration is not required, it is encouraged for planning purposes. Residents interested in participating are asked to register at Kamloops.ca/CleanTheBeach. Pre-registration will close at 9:00 am on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Rain or shine, volunteers should plan to arrive at the east end of Riverside Park by 11:00 am. On arrival, volunteers will receive collection materials, route maps, and instructions on safe handling procedures for items like glass, sharps, or hazardous waste. Participants are advised to wear closed-toed shoes and bring work gloves and high-visibility vests if available.
Pre-event beach sweeps for sharps and other potentially harmful materials will be conducted by social agencies involved in the Clean Team supportive employment program, ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
“Together, we can make a meaningful difference in protecting our local environment,” said Ashley Ekelund, the City’s Social and Community Development Supervisor. “This event is a great opportunity to connect as a community while keeping our beaches and riverbanks safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
To thank volunteers for their efforts, a celebratory BBQ will be held at Riverside Park following the cleanup. The event will also feature educational tables, highlighting local ecology and the importance of maintaining clean and healthy waterways.
