Since 2010, dedicated and skilled aquatic educators with the City of Kamloops have been shaping young minds with critical water and boating safety lessons. Every June, kindergarten students enthusiastically participate in field trips where they learn the importance of lifejackets, safe boating practices, and essential supplies to bring on the water. The interactive sessions aim to inspire lifelong awareness and respect for water safety from an early age.
Recognizing the need for expanded water safety education, a partnership with TRU Student Union began in 2023, offering international students affordable beginner swimming lessons. The program, designed to provide confidence and essential water safety skills, has supported 140 students to date—with a growing waitlist indicating the demand for the program to continue.
With increased programming, including higher-level lessons introduced this winter, efforts to promote safety on the water remain strong. As interest and participation rise, these programs are creating a lasting impact, ensuring more people feel comfortable, informed, and prepared when recreating in water.
