The City of Kamloops clearly and strongly advocates for Kamloops to other organizations and levels of government.
Below are the key areas where Council will focus their advocacy efforts. Click on each one to see what success looks like to Council.
Areas of Focus
- Improve RCMP's ability to enforce the Criminal Code and reduce the impact of prolific offenders on the community.
- Establish a mental health court.
- Establish a community court to move sentencing responsiblilties from the province to the community.
- Implement changes to parole and bail system to keep offenders incarcerated.
- Improve the inventory and diversity of affordable housing available to residents.
- Develop underutilized provincial and federal lands for housing.
- Improve seniors' quality of life by allowing residents to age in place as their health and support needs change, through co-located independent living, assisted living, and residential care.
- Provide continuity of care for aging residents.
- Increase supports for seniors to "age in place" at home through enhanced community programming (i.e. Better at Home)
- Improve access to physical and mental health supports for vulnerable residents living in supportive housing.
- Ensure the continuity of funding programs (i.e. Reaching Home) to support community initiatives.
- Improve access to mental health supports for residents of all ages.
- Improve access to medically-supported detox and in-patient recover programs.
- Improve addiction prevention programming.
- Improve residents' access to family health care.
- Reduce the strain on Royal Inland Hospital for non-urgent medical care.
- Support the Division of Family Practice.
- Improve the safety of residents through faster emergency medical service.
- Reduce the frequency/cost of Kamloops Fire Rescue response to medical calls.
- Reduce risk of interface wildfires on private and Provincial public lands.
- Partner with Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc to reduce the risk of interface wildfire.
- Balance the need to preserve agriulture/food security with city growth on land with low agricultural value.
- Support local Indigenous communities to add land to reserve.
- Support reform to tax laws to benefit community land trust contributions.
- Improve access to HandiDart and accessible taxis to improve mobility of residents with mobility limitations.
- Funding and resources to provide improved supports to help newcomers integrate.
- Amplify the efforts and impact of community voices.
- Ensure continuing grant programs for community amenities and infrastructure.
