Contest Now Open!

The Kamloops Fire Rescue Honorary Junior Fire Chiefs program works to build a culture of fire safety from a young age. Two kids in kindergarten to grade four are selected each year to serve a term as Fire Chief where they learn about firefighting throughout the year in an immersive environment. They will enjoy a pizza party with their classmates, take special rides in fire trucks with firefighters and Sparky the Dog, spend time learning at local fire stations, participate in public safety campaigns, and help to develop fire safety content for other children. They may also be asked to take part in public celebrations and events.
The program is designed to spark excitement about fire safety and give kids a chance to connect with their community in fun and meaningful ways. When children understand the importance of prevention and share that knowledge with their classmates and families, the whole community benefits.
Selection Process
Each year in the fall a submission window opens for kids to apply to become a Junior Fire Chief. The opportunity is promoted through the local school system and through regular City communication channels. At the end of the submission period, two randomized draws decide the successful candidates - one for a Kamloops student and one for a student from Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.
