City Receives Federal and Provincial Funding for Tranquille Sanitary Sewer Project

Release Date

The City of Kamloops was recently awarded a substantial Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program contribution from Infrastructure Canada for work on Phase 3 of the Tranquille Sanitary Sewer Upgrade Project, which is slated for construction in 2025.

The sanitary sewer trunk main along Tranquille Road, which extends from Aviation Way to 12th Street, services approximately 39,000 people and is one of the city’s most critical sewer mains. The trunk main is nearing the end of its life and requires replacement and increased capacity.

The federal and provincial contributions through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program account for approximately $12.6 million, with the federal share accounting for $6.9 million and the provincial share being approximately $5.8 million. The City will pay for the remaining project costs associated with active transportation and beautification components through sewer levies, taxation, and debt.

Phase 3 is the final leg of the Tranquille Road Sanitary Sewer Project with completion expected in 2027. Phase 1 work on the North Primary Lift Station to Crestline Street was completed in 2017, and Phase 2, which encompasses Southill Street to 12th Street, was completed in 2021. In addition to the sanitary main replacement, further upgrades along the corridor included pedestrian paths, landscaping, and intersection and boulevard improvements.

The financial contributions help to support improvements to increase capacity to manage wastewater, which will help protect the community and ecosystems.

"From public transit to water infrastructure, the federal government is helping communities become more resilient by investing in projects that make a difference. By upgrading the Tranquille Sanitary Sewer in Kamloops, we are supporting a clean and sustainable future, which will help create a safer, more vibrant place for residents to call home,” said John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.

“Kamloops is a place where the essence of natural beauty harmonizes with the warmth of its residents. Welcoming many visitors to the Tournament Capital of Canada means it’s vital that the City’s wastewater services are efficient and reliable,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “That’s why we’re proud to work with all orders of government on infrastructure projects like this that support vibrant, healthy communities and protect the ecosystem for years to come.”

The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program contributes to infrastructure that:

  • creates economic growth
  • sustains well-paying jobs
  • builds inclusive communities
  • supports a low-carbon, green economy

The funding for this project is part of a joint investment that was announced on June 2, 2023 of more than $48.6 million to support seven wastewater projects across the province.
