Kamloops Museum and Archives Reopens Doors: Preserving the Past, Illuminating the Present

The Kamloops Museum and Archives is a place where Kamloops’ history is shared in the light of the present. After a lengthy closure, the Archives is reopening to the public on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

We are fortunate and honoured to house one of the largest archives in the Interior of BC that preserves and provides access to the records of the activities of Kamloops residents from 1863 to the recent past. The Archives includes a substantial collection of photographs, books, papers, maps, and architectural drawings contributed by our community.

A reading room is available to patrons to access the Kamloops Museum and Archives reference books collection, microfilm readers, finding aids for archival collections, historical articles, general Kamloops history subject and biographical files, and card catalogue indexes to the Kamloops Museum and Archives photograph collection and microfilmed newspaper collection.

Mitchell Fridman is the new Archivist at the Kamloops Museum and Archives. Mitchell holds a Master of Library and Information Studies with a specialization in archives. His skilled experience includes working for a private family archive in Montreal, a botanical garden in Pennsylvania, the corporate archives at the Bank of Montreal, the Makivik Corporation, and the English Montreal School Board.

The Kamloops Museum and Archives strives to provide the Kamloops community as well as any interested researchers access to the city’s cultural history through the vast collections of historical records. The Archives’ aim is to reflect the priorities of our community and to fill the gaps in the collections of underserved communities.

The Archives are open Tuesday–Fridays, 1:15 pm–4:00 pm, and by appointment on Saturdays. Please feel free to contact Mitchell Fridman, Archivist, mfridman@kamloops.ca or 250-828-3689.
