The Sandman Centre will receive some important technical upgrades this fall to meet Canadian Hockey League standards before the 2023 Memorial Cup presented by Kia. These upgrades will benefit all events that have a broadcasting component and will keep the facility ranked among the best in Canada for hosting events.
The upgrades include the following components:
- Game presentation systems
- Video production control room/video replay systems
- Broadcast cable infrastructure
- Signage, sponsorship, and distributed video systems
“As Canada’s Tournament Capital, we strive to provide the best facilities possible for our local, provincial, and national sport partners to deliver memorable, quality events at exceptional venues,” said Jeff Putnam, the City’s Parks and Civic Facilities Manager. “Ultimately, these upgrades are about providing an exceptional game experience to fans, whether they’re in the arena or watching from around the world.”
Including some temporary dehumidification and air conditioning units for the Memorial Cup event itself, the upgrades will cost approximately $940,000, which will be funded from a combination of existing the operating budget ($25,000), Gaming funds ($120,000), Community Works funds ($445,000), and the Asset Management Reserve ($350,000).
The City was awarded the 2023 Memorial Cup presented by Kia on May 26 and includes eight games played over nine evenings in June 2023. The event is estimated to have an economic impact of $12-$15 million. More information on the event is available at CHLMemorialCup.ca.
