In-Person Public Participation Now Welcome at Council Meetings and Public Hearings

Release date:
July 19, 2021

Kamloops, BC – With the province now in Step 3 of the BC Restart Plan, the City of Kamloops is welcoming residents and the media back to participate in person at Council Meetings and Public Hearings. The next Council Meeting is tomorrow at 1:30 pm followed by a Public Hearing at 7:00 pm. All meetings are currently being held in the Valley First Lounge at Sandman Centre, 300 Lorne Street, where there is space and the ability to physically distance. The City asks that the public follow all public health orders while attending public meetings, including wearing a mask in indoor public places until fully vaccinated and when physical distancing is not possible.

Virtual participation in Council Meetings and Public Hearings will still be an option for the foreseeable future via Zoom. The City introduced public participation through Zoom in spring 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented in-person gatherings. Virtual participation makes engagement more accessible for many members of the public. The recent addition of closed captioning to the City’s Zoom feed is another initiative towards increased accessibility.

Virtual participants will be granted equal opportunities to engage as those who participate in person. At the designated times for public input, virtual attendees can use the “raise your hand” feature to indicate a desire to speak, and they will be called upon alongside in-person attendees. Step-by-step instructions for participating in a public meeting via Zoom are available at Kamloops.ca/HowToZoom.
