The holiday season is fast approaching, which means it’s almost time for Operation Red Nose, a designated driving service that gets you and your vehicle home safely. The service is by donation and is available to any person operating a motor vehicle who does not wish to drive their car for any reason. A person does not have to be drinking to use the service. PacificSport Interior BC is hosting the 23rd Operation Red Nose campaign in Kamloops, and the service will run over 15 nights of service. The dates of operation are November 29, 30, December 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, and 31, and the times of service are 8:00 pm to 3:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights and 8:00 pm to 2:00 am on Thursday nights.
Operation Red Nose volunteer, Tara Holmes, is now co-coordinating the campaign with long‑time Coordinator Katie Klassen. "I have been volunteering for Operation Red Nose for about six years. I look forward to the social camaraderie of reconnecting with our ORN pals. We have so much fun helping with this service and keeping impaired drivers off the road, and raising funds for PacificSport sure makes it worthwhile. I am confident that if a team of three comes out to volunteer for one night, they will have so much fun and they will come back for more," said Holmes.
This year, Operation Red Nose hopes to recruit 250 volunteers for its campaign. Kamloops has relied on the same volunteers for many years, and some volunteers are now retiring. Klassen and Holmes hope to recruit new volunteers to step in and fill those volunteer positions.
Volunteer positions include Designated Driver, Escort Driver, Navigator, Phone Operator, and Dispatcher. Volunteers can team up with their friends, family, or co-workers to form a road team of three, or they can volunteer on their own and be paired with other volunteers to form a team. Volunteers can commit to one night or more, and the shifts are approximately six hours long. In 2018, Operation Red Nose had 200 volunteers fill 623 volunteer positions.
New volunteers must compete the Operation Red Nose Volunteer Application Form and have a Police Information Check completed by the RCMP. Those who volunteered in 2017 and 2018 only need to fill out the Operation Red Nose Volunteer Application Form. The forms are available at the Tournament Capital Centre, Volunteer Kamloops, and the Desert Gardens Seniors Community Centre or at OperationRedNose.com.
