Mayor Ken Christian presented Dr. Alan Shaver, the outgoing TRU President, with the Overlander/Pioneer Spirit Award at Shaver's farewell gathering today.

The Overlander/Pioneer Spirit Award is reserved for recognizing exceptional service.

“Dr. Shaver has led TRU through an exciting era. He has focused on academic rigour and scholarship, he has worked tirelessly with TRU World to promote TRU and Kamloops internationally, and he has made great efforts to connect TRU with the city in meaningful partnerships,” said Mayor Ken Christian.

“The Pioneer Spirit Award recognizes those that have influenced the character of our city and Dr. Alan Shaver is one of those who have helped shape our city through the growth and maturity of our university,” Mayor Christian added.

Dr. Shaver has served two terms as TRU President, and he officially wrapped up his duties on August 31.

TRU’s incoming President, Dr. Brett Fairbairn, will officially begin his term in December, and Mayor Christian says he looks forward to continuing a positive and productive relationship with TRU.

“Dr. Shaver and I recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration, and Dr. Fairbairn and I will be carrying on the conversation,” said Mayor Christian.
