Every fall, the City begins preparing to update its annual budget, which is the financial plan for creating and maintaining programs and services for citizens.
The public budget meeting in February is a key budget cycle activity. At the meeting, the City will update residents on the 2020 budget and the 2020–2024 Five-Year Financial Plan.
Currently, the 2020 provisional budget indicates a 2.76% increase in total municipal property taxes, which reflects a $61 increase to the average household.
“The 2020 budget items with significant increased costs include the RCMP contract, staff and wage contracts, the increasing cost of services in general, and the demand for additional services and programs and for social and environmental responsibility,” said Kathy Humphrey, the City’s Corporate Services Director.
At the meeting on February 20, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on what has been updated or deleted in the provisional budget as well as share ideas and comments on the 11 proposed supplemental budget items that were introduced to Council on January 28.
The public is also invited to share comments on the proposed supplemental items online. Summaries of the 11 items, their proposed funding sources, and their supporting business cases are available on the Let’s Talk Budget web page.
“By participating in the City’s budget process, citizens can help create a strong future for Kamloops,” said Humphrey.
“The planning process is continuous, and while projects may take years to implement, the City wants to hear ideas so that staff can investigate if and how those ideas could be feasibly incorporated into the Five-Year Financial Plan.”
The 2020 budget, including the supplemental items, will be discussed and finalized on February 25, and tax rates will be approved and set in April.
