Hillside Stadium Artificial Turf Replacement Complete

Release date:
August 21, 2020

With the completion of the artificial turf replacement project, Warner Rentals Field at Hillside Stadium is better than ever. The turf replacement is the latest of several asset management projects at the stadium, including a new scoreboard and updated sound system and lighting in 2019. The final phase of the project will be the track replacement, which Council deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently scheduled for 2021.

The new field uses the same paint and line technique as the NFL, CFL, and other professional leagues. Like other new stadiums, it is permanently lined for soccer and Canadian football only, which creates a less-cluttered playing field. Temporary lines can be added for other uses, such as high school football, lacrosse, and rugby.

“Hillside Stadium is a premier recreation venue for locals and visitors of all levels—from casual walkers to Olympic hopefuls and everything in between,” said Sean Smith, the City’s Business Operations and Events Supervisor. “These updates keep the facility at the top of its game so our athletes can do the same.”

Hillside Stadium opened to the public in 2006 with Canada’s first FIFA-certified artificial field and was showcased by the World Under 19 Mexico/Canada Soccer Game. The facility has been hosting the BC Lions Training Camp since 2010 and is home to the Kamloops Broncos and TRU WolfPack Soccer.

“We are delighted to have the new turf field at Hillside! This new turf is huge plus for our WolfPack Women’s Soccer team and for the entire community,” said Mark Pennington, Head Coach of the TRU WolfPack Women’s Soccer team. “We believe that our Hillside venue is one of the best in the country and now we have a turf to match, making us one of the premier soccer venues in Canada. We are really excited to get out on the sparkly new field and hopefully it will be a lucky field for us once our competitive games start up again.”

Unless it is booked for a special event, the stadium is open 5:30 am–10:00 pm daily and is free for the public to use. To inquire about facility and event bookings, visit Kamloops.ca/BookNow.
