Kamloops, BC – As part of the 2020 Asphalt Resurfacing Program, the City of Kamloops has hired BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. resurface the intersection of Columbia Street and 3rd Avenue. The project’s scope of work is limited to milling existing asphalt, paving, and placing new pavement markings. This project will also improve uneven surfaces for pedestrians through the intersection.
The work will extend up 3rd Avenue to just north of St Ann’s Academy, including the eastbound slip lane. The work will start on Tuesday, September 8, and is anticipated to be complete by September 18, with the most significant traffic impacts taking place on September 8. Hours of work will be 7:00 am to 5:00 pm; however, work on Columbia Street will be restricted to between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
City staff and its contractor recognize that this is a very busy time of year and have been working closely with Royal Inland Hospital, Ellis Don, and St Ann’s Academy to help mitigate the impacts of this project, and everyone has been extremely accommodating.
During the project:
- Transit will have a dedicated lane through the construction area, and stops will not be impacted.
- Emergency vehicles will be accommodated at all times.
- Traffic will be reduced to one lane westbound.
- The two eastbound lanes will be merged into one and shifted to the north side of the meridian on Columbia Street.
With the recently completed Victoria Street West corridor ready to accommodate free-flowing traffic, we strongly encourage motorists to consider an alternate route to and from the downtown area.
While every attempt will be made to minimize the impact on business owners, residents, motorists, transit users, and pedestrians during construction, delays and congestion are inevitable and should be expected. Visit Kamloops.ca/Webcams to view traffic conditions. Transit users are reminded to visit BCTransit.com for up-to-date schedules and to subscribe for transit alerts.
Motorists are reminded to use caution when driving in the area and to obey all traffic control personnel and devices.
