The City of Kamloops has been recognized with a 2019 Safety Improvement Award from the BC Municipal Safety Association for reducing incidents and illness on the job.

The award was presented to the City’s Safety Manager, Caleb Mierau, and Civic Operations Director, Jen Fretz, at the BC Municipal Safety Association (BCMSA) and Public Works Association of BC (PWABC) Joint Conference, September 15 – 18, 2019, in Penticton, BC.

The award acknowledges an improvement organization-wide in WorkSafeBC’s “experience rating”, which measures employer compensation premiums in relation to injury costs, with the goal of lowering premiums based on fewer incidents. The City achieved this through a number of safety activities to reduce incidents, increase return-to-work opportunities, and reduce compliance issues, which helped lower its experience rating by 15.3%.

“Our senior leadership team and City departments worked together to set annual goals and action items that helped lead to this achievement. Ultimately the City’s’ efforts in preventing injuries and reducing time loss resulted in 15% decrease in the experience rating saving the City more than $170,000 in 2019,” said Caleb Mierau, City Safety Manager.

The City’s Civic Operations department was integral in supporting this improvement based on health and safety improvements in 2018. The department grew by 65% through an amalgamation with Parks and Civic Facilities, however, Civic Operations achieved a 35% drop in medical aids, a 19% decrease in lost time injuries and a 53% reduction in lost time due to injury.

This is the first time the City has won a Safety Improvement Award through the BCMSA, an organization that helps municipalities develop, implement and evaluate their health and safety management plans in an ongoing way.

The City was also honoured with two PWABC awards. The Women’s Public Works Ambassador Award went to Civic Operations Director Jen Fretz and the Community Celebration Award (population under 100,000) for Civic Operations’ Public Works Week Open House and Celebration in May 2019.
