The new North Thompson Emergency Water Intake is located on Yates Road and will draw water from the North Thompson River. It will provide an alternative water source for the City of Kamloops in the event that an emergency forces the shut down of the primary water intake from the South Thompson River on River Street.
In August 2015, the provincial and federal governments supported this project by awarding the City with a New Building Canada Fund. Detailed design was undertaken through 2015/16, and the construction contract was tendered in the summer of 2016. Construction began in late 2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
