Yard Waste

Yard Waste

The City has three free yard waste drop-off sites that service both residential and commercial customers. Accepted items include:

  • grass clippings
  • leaves
  • fallen fruit
  • pumpkins
  • garden waste
  • tree prunings up to max 6" diameter (Cinnamon Ridge will accept up to 24")

Items from the Bunker Road Yard Waste Depot and the Barnhartvale Landfill are ground up and transported to the Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility and Yard Waste Site, where it is composted via open-air windrow composting. The resulting compost is used by the City's Parks crews as top dressing on fields and in flower beds, and is available for purchase by the public.

When possible, larger prunings are separated from other yard waste and ground into wood chips, which are sold to Domtar as hogfuel.

The City composts an average of 11,000 tonnes of yard waste per year. It takes between 8 and 12 months to turn yard waste into compost.

Christmas Trees that are collected by the City each year are also included in this program.
