8th Street Smart Turn Channel

Eagle Rock Construction

The City of Kamloops has contracted Eagle Rock Construction to install a smart right turn channel at the intersection of Fortune Drive and 8th Street, which will improve visibility and safety for drivers and pedestrians.

The project includes:

  • installing a right-turn channel
  • replacing concrete on the curb, gutters and sidewalks
  • installing stamped concrete infill and regular concrete infill
  • upgrading traffic lights
  • marking pavement and installing signage

Construction will begin the week of April 23, 2018, with the expected project completion by end of June 2018. The majority of the work will take place during the day, Monday to Friday, with the possibility of some weekend and evening work. Anticipated hours of work will be 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Regular traffic: A detour route is recommended via 7th Street. See map.
Transit: Buses will be rerouted down 7th Street for the duration of the project.
Truck/Dangerous Goods Route: Westbound truck traffic should continue down Fortune/Tranquille Road, turn right on 12th Street, and onto the Halston Avenue onramp. Eastbound truck traffic should detour on 12th Street, and onto the Halston Avenue onramp.
Pedestrians: Pedestrians will NOT be able to access the corner of 8th Street and Fortune Drive. Please use pedestrian-controlled crossing near Surrey Avenue to cross 8th Street or the crosswalk at the intersection of 7th Avenue and Fortune Drive to cross Fortune Drive. See map.

Business access will be maintained throughout the project, and the bus stop north of the intersection will not be affected.

Traffic disruptions can be expected along the construction route. The northbound and westbound curb lanes may be closed between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm, and the right-hand turning lane may be closed for the duration of the project. Please obey all traffic control personnel and equipment when in the vicinity of the construction.

Construction schedule updates will be posted here and local residents and businesses will be kept informed of any potential major impacts. If you have any questions, please contact or call 250-828-3461.

Thank you for your patience during construction.
