Water Quality

The Water Treatment Process
Water is pumped from the river at the "intake" structure, coming through a 3mm gauge aquatic screen designed to prevent fish, frogs, branches etc. from being pulled into the pumps. The water flows by gravity through a large pipe under River Street and enters the Centre for Water Quality below ground.

A coagulant is added to the raw river water to cause very fine particles suspended in the water to clump together. This process, called "flocculation", enhances the performance of the membranes.

Water then enters the primary membrane tanks where about 92% of the water is drawn off as clean water and goes into a reservoir called a "clearwell" under the building, where it is chlorinated, then pumped over to the main pumping station and into the distribution system.

The 8% "reject" water containing 100% of the dirt moves from the primary membrane tanks to the secondary membrane tanks, where approximately 90% of this water is drawn off as clean water.

The remaining reject water (less than 1% of the water drawn from the river, containing 100% of the dirt) goes to the DAF (dissolved air flotation) tank where tiny air bubbles and another dose of coagulant cause solids to sink or float.

The solids (sludge) from the DAF tank will go to a centrifuge to be de-watered. The resulting solid "cake" will be used as landfill cover.

The water from the DAF tank goes to the wetland pond in front of the Centre, and this water is used to irrigate our landscaping and the nearby playing fields. From conventional sand filtration plants, the reject or wasted water amounts to at least 8%.
Ours is less than 1%.
