Membrane Filtration
The membranes used in the Kamloops Centre for Water Quality are hollow polymer fibres that are immersed in tanks of river water. The membranes are supplied by Zenon Environmental Inc., a Canadian company with its world headquarters in Oakville, On.
How Membranes Work
A vacuum process draws raw water from the outside to the inside of the hollow membrane
tube through small pores, removing particles larger than the pore size.
Every 10 seconds, the water in the membranes tanks is aerated to scrub the membranes.
Every 15 minutes, the vacuum pressure is reversed to back-pulse clean water through
the membrane pores to "blow" dirt from the membranes surface.
Nominal pore sizes in the membranes are 0.04 microns (0.00004 millimetres) in
diameter. Cryptosporidium cysts are approximately 2 to 5 microns in diameter; at least 50
times the membrane pore diameter.
Individual membrane fibres are grouped in "elements" of 2646 fibres per element, which are in turn contained in cassettes similar to the one pictured to the left. The KCWQ contains approximately 12 million fibres. If laid end to end, they would stretch for more than 24,000 kilometres.
