Transportation Master Plan

The City of Kamloops is undertaking a Transportation Master Plan (TMP) to be completed by the first quarter of 2017.

Kamloops continues to be known as a connected and mobile city with the convergence of three regional highways, two regional rail lines, six bridge spans over the Thompson Rivers, and a robust network of roads, pathways, and trails. The TravelSmart Plan, which was completed in 1999 was the City’s last major transportation planning exercise dedicated to optimizing the capacity and operation of the community’s existing transportation infrastructure. Subsequently, the Official Community Plan (KAMPLAN) was developed, followed by master plans for transit, bicycle, pedestrian, and trail modes of travel.

The Sustainable Kamloops Plan developed in 2010 and the current update of the KAMPLAN are defining a new vision for a sustainable Kamloops, which in turn, is necessitating an updated TMP to integrate and connect these planning initiatives. The updated plan will address the changes facing Kamloops and the transportation issues that are influencing our community of 86,000 as we plan for a population growth to 120,000 residents by 2036. The TMP will help the City plan for growth but also shift to more sustainable transportation.

Want to get involved?

Community and stakeholder engagement is paramount to ensuring a final TMP that reflects and meets the desires and needs of Kamloops citizens. A Stakeholder Advisory Group (Advisory Group) has been established to represent a cross section of individuals and groups with specific transportation-related interests and/or expertise. This group will advise the TMP team throughout the project.

Community members will also have several ways to participate in the TMP and share their ideas, concerns and views through a community survey and several fun events during the summer and fall (stay tuned for logistics.) The TMP will be developed in four phases, with community information and engagement being a part of each phase. Dates and locations of community engagement initiatives will be published here throughout the project.
