North Shore Transit Exchange
Background
Two City of Kamloops documents identified the need for a North Shore Transit Exchange. The Kamloops Transit Business Plan, completed
in March 2007, specifically identified a North Shore Transit Exchange in the vicinity of North Hills Shopping Centre.
The North Shore Neighbourhood Plan identifies the area around North Hills Shopping Centre and Fortune Shopping Centre as the North Shore Town Centre.
The establishment of a transit exchange within this town centre helps support the vision of this area as the core of activity in the North Shore.
Funding and Construction
In 2007 the City of Kamloops received funding through the provincial Public Transit Infrastructure Program based on transit ridership and
population. The following year MMM Group Limited was hired to complete design.
In March 2008, a public open house and survey collected feedback on design and location of the proposed transit exchange. Transit customers, local residents, and local businesses showed a strong preference for the transit exchange to be located on Sydney Avenue.
Construction of the transit exchange began on March 2, 2010. There were a few delays caused by the rain in May and June but the exchange will be open to transit on August 11. Traffic will not be permitted in the transit exchange area, however all driveways to North Hills Shopping Centre and Sydney Plaza will be open to the public.
The new exchange will provide improved amenities for transit customers and will offer an attractive focal point to the North Shore Business area. Routes 1- Tranquille, 3 - Westsyde, 10 - North Shore TRU Express, 13 - Yellowhead, and 14 - Batchelor will use the new North Shore Transit Exchange.
