Liquid Waste Management Plan
Everybody uses water. What we do with it after we use it, is what the Liquid
Waste Management Plan (LWMP) is all about. The Plan follows BC Environment guidelines
for a LWMP and is led by the City of Kamloops.
The purpose of the LWMP is to:
Define sewage issues and problems;
Identify and evaluate options; and
Prepare an action plan for implementation.
On July 15, 1999 the Province implemented the new Municipal Sewage Regulation, which could dramatically affect the way our city treats and disposes of its sewage.
The primary issues facing the City are:
The increased amount of sewage generated by our growing population over the next twenty years.
The method and degree of treatment to be used.
The disposal method.
The issues to be considered are technical, environmental, social and financial. We hope to
develop a plan for Council's consideration that has strong community consensus, so public
input is essential to develop and evaluate solutions.
Who is Involved and How?
The Public - through open houses, questionnaires, written comments and this web site.
Public Advisory Committee (PAC) - 11 members from the community
Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) - 10 members
Steering Committee - directs the work of the TAC and PAC, provides input on options
and reports to Council on progress.
City Council - will review and adopt plan, and submit it to the Ministry of Water,
Land and Air Protection for approval.
Ministry of Water, Land & Air Protection - will review and approve the Plan.
What Areas Are Included?
The entire City of Kamloops is included in the Plan. The Plan focuses on the sewered
areas of the City, but attention is also directed at the unsewered areas, which currently
utilize on-site systems to treat and dispose of their wastewater.
The focus of the LWMP for these areas will be to extend the life of the on-site systems by improving the effluent quality, reducing water use, improving disposal and proper maintenance. Connection to the existing collection system may be an option.
There are several options available for the treatment and disposal of wastewater from the sewered areas of Kamloops.
