Preventative Treatment for Pine Beetle Infestation

Pheromone Repellents
(Verbenone) - Verbenone pouches can be attached to specific high value trees chosen to be protected, however, they are not a guarantee that pine beetles will not infest the tree. Further, beetles repelled by the Verbenone will look elsewhere for suitable host trees.

Pesticides
(Sevin) - Some grades of Sevin are registered for effective use against Mountain Pine Beetle and Western Pine Beetle. Homeowners choosing to use this product should take the time to educate themselves on the proper precautions needed for application and hire a qualified pest management company. Timing and coverage of Sevin application will have a significant impact on it's effectiveness. Sevin is a non-specific pesticide which may have negative effects on beneficial insects, as well as wildlife such as song birds and wood peckers. Sevin can be hazardous to human health.
