Pine Beetle Management

Environment

Burning & Disposal of Pine Beetle Infested Trees
Burning & Disposal of Pine Beetle Infested Trees There are several methods available for attempting to control the further spread of the pine beetle. Treatment must occur prior to March 31 as the mature beetles will begin emerging and dispersing to new sites later in April. The Pine Beetle infestation levels within the City of Kamloops are decreasing and common methods of treatment (i.e. verbenone) may be effective in protection your trees.

To assist with disposing of beetle-infested wood from private lands, the City is pursuing funding from senior government. Regardless of whether funding is forthcoming, the City will not be felling or moving trees on private lands. If the City receives additional funding, it intends to develop a program of picking up felled trees at curbside for disposal.

Falling and Burning
Trees are felled, bucked, and infested material burned. Landowners wishing to have trees felled and removed should look for an experienced and insured tree service company. The requirement for a City of Kamloops Tree Cutting Permit has been waived for pine beetle attacked tree removals off of private lands.

The fire must be hot enough to completely burn the bark and stump. Appropriate burning permits must be acquired. Landowners who have property of one acre or more may be eligible for a permit burn before March 31. Applications MUST be made at Firehall No. 1 on Summit Drive.
Phone: 372-5131.

Note: Falling the tree does not kill the beetle. The infested material must be burned or buried. If you wish to keep the wood (for lumber, firewood etc.) the bark of beetle infested trees must be peeled and disposed of (through burning or burial) or the larvae will continue to survive and mature.

Curbside Pick-up

Important Update - March, 2008
