Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive

Kamloops, B.C. - The 7th annual Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive, sponsored by Kamloops Honda in partnership with Literacy in Kamloops, takes place January 9th to 30th. Over the past six years, more than 60,000 children’s books have been donated to Heap the Honda. Books are sorted, cleaned and stickered by teams of volunteers and distributed to 22 Bright Red Bookshelves at various locations in Kamloops throughout the year. Every child attending ABC Family Literacy Day on January 23rd will also receive a new-to-them book. The goal of this project is to increase book ownership in all homes and to foster a love of reading.

This year, 14 schools are participating in Heap the Honda. The Cat in the Hat will be visiting many of these schools early this week to encourage students to donate the books they have outgrown and are willing to share with others.

Literacy in Kamloops invites the public to join local politicians and others at this year’s launch of Heap the Honda at Kamloops Honda on Saturday, January 9th at 10.00 am. New or gently used children’s books can be dropped off at Kamloops Honda from January 9th to 30th. Other drop-off locations include North Kamloops and Kamloops libraries, Henry Grube Education Centre and any Bright Red Bookshelf location.

On January 29th, The Cat in the Hat, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 will be accepting book donations at the “Bring a Children’s Book” to the Kamloops Blazers Game.

Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive is just one of the many literacy initiatives taking place in Kamloops in January in support of National Family Literacy Day, celebrated each year on January 27th. When families play and read together, they learn together and have fun.
