Blackwell Wildfire Hazard Reduction Prescribed Fire

Kamloops, B.C. - The City of Kamloops is planning a 24-hectare prescribed grass fire in a forest fuel management area behind homes near the intersection of Blackwell Road and Barnhartvale Road, directly adjacent to Dallas Barnhartvale Park.

Under current conditions, this is expected to take place today, Wednesday April 3rd, 2013. The purpose of this intentionally lit fire is to reduce the amount of dead grass present in this area and therefore reduce the fire hazard under controlled conditions. There will be approximately 20 personnel and equipment on site during the burn. This includes City of Kamloops Parks staff, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations, Wildfire Management Branch staff and contract fire suppression resources. This prescribed fire will be carried out in accordance to a plan that has been approved by the City of Kamloops, Kamloops Fire Rescue and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

This plan follows specified weather and vegetation conditions to ensure public safety and that the objectives are met. A qualified prescribed fire burn boss will lead the operation. The burn is expected to last one day.
