#kamloopsbudget Generates a Following

Kamloops, B.C. - At last week's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department public budget meeting, the City of Kamloops introduced the integration of social media into the process. The meeting was live-streamed with an online chat room, and participation was encouraged on Twitter via the hashtag #kamloopsbudget.

The new online presence garnered positive comments from media, citizens and other municipalities. The objective of using social media was to create additional awareness about the budget process and engage a younger and more diverse audience. The first budget meeting proved to be a good start.

Presentation materials for each meeting will be available on the website at www.kamloops.ca/2013budget two days prior to the meeting, so residents can preview the information, formulate questions and comments, and follow along with the meeting from the comfort o f their own home.

The next public meeting takes place tomorrow from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Parkside Lounge at Interior Savings Centre, and will discuss the Public Works and Utilities budget. The last public meeting will be on February 5th, regarding Corporate Services and Community Safety, and Development and Engineering Services.

These public meetings will be summed up with final deliberations taking place on April 9th at 9:00 am in Council Chambers. This meeting will determine the final tax rate for 2013.

So let's talk. By sharing your priorities and participating in the City’s budget process, you can help create a strong future for our city.
