ABC Family Literacy Day

Kamloops, B.C. - The 6th Annual ABC Family Literacy Day in Kamloops will take place January 28th, 2012 in support of Family Literacy Day®, an annual initiative developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage parents and children to spend at least 15 minutes a day enjoying a learning activity together. The theme this year is "The Learning Journey". Learning happens everywhere, and it's easy to make learning part of your daily life. Family Literacy Day will round up a week of fun family events as part of Unplug & Play Literacy Week.

Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative (KELLI), Kamloops Community YMCA/YWCA Child Care Resource and Referral, TNRD Library System, Interior Health Speech and Language, School District 73, City of Kamloops, Make Children First, Kamloops Foundation, B100, School District 73 and United Church Preschool are planning activities that encourage families to build literacy by connecting and playing.

The 6th Annual ABC Family Literacy Day will be held at the Henry Grube Centre, 245 Kitchener Crescent, from 9:00 am -12:30 pm. This annual event is for families and their preschool and school age children to interact with storytellers, musicians and puppets, join in sing-a-longs, dance together, make crafts, play family games and enjoy hands-on activities.

Special guests include MC Steve Ayres with B100, Lee's Little Rockers, CJFC anchors Bill O'Donovan and Susan Edgell, Spike Wallace of the Blazers, the Old Time Fiddlers, Djembe Django, Kamloops Daily News publisher Tim Shoults, Kamloops Thompson Children's Choir, TRU women's volleyball team with Larry Read, Susan McCowan from the Kamloops Library, drummer David Milwain, Mayor Milobar and Councillors, Terry Lake, Kevin Krueger, and Mother Goose. Starbucks will be on hand with coffee, Kamloops Fire Department will have a truck on-site for a "climb aboard" tour, and the Big Little Science Centre will feature an interactive booth. TNRD librarian Joelle Samson will create an imagination centre and there will also be a quiet room with ongoing Mother Goose sessions. Rivercity Gymnastics will host family physical literacy activities in the games room. Don't forget to stop by the Kamloops Museum & Archives table for information on all their upcoming programs. This event is free and no registration is required. Each child receives a book to take home from Heap the Honda, courtesy of Literacy in Kamloops (LinK).
