Waste Reduction Week

Kamloops, B.C. - The City of Kamloops has proclaimed the week of October 17th to 23rd as Waste Reduction Week. Throughout this week the City encourages the residents of Kamloops to take action by conserving resources and curbing wasteful practices. Residents can call 250-828-3461 to downsize their garbage container for no charge during this week of reduction.

The City of Kamloops is proud of its residents for the great strides that have been made with its diversion and recycling programs. Most notably, there has been a diversion rate of 25% for the curbside recycling program. Each year, since inception of the program, over 4000 metric tonnes of recyclables have been diverted. This is equivalent to 1500 solid waste trucks each year not going to the landfill. As the multi-family recycling programs launches in 2012, an additional 400 solid waste trucks are expected to divert material for recycling rather than proceeding to Mission Flats Landfill.

Additionally, a constant flow of yard waste is being diverted from our landfill. In excess of 10,000 metric tonnes of prunings, leaves, and grass clippings are composted at Cinnamon Ridge each year. This represents approximately 10% of all the waste generated within the city of Kamloops.

There are many options for recycling unwanted items in the community. Many of the items destined for the landfill are recyclable through various product Stewardship Programs such as used oil, fluorescent bulbs, electronics and paint. Residents are encouraged to call the Recycling Council of BC (RCBC) recycling hotline at 1-800-667-4321 for information on locations for local recycling options or visit the RCBC recyclepedia tool at www.rcbc.bc.ca.

Currently, the City is diverting the following items at Mission Flats Landfill:

Other programs to divert additional products from the landfill are ongoing, so stay connected to the website at www.kamloops.ca/garbage.
