Blow Off Some Steam at Westsyde Pool

Kamloops, B.C. - The City of Kamloops and the Westsyde Community Development Society is hosting a free community swim to commemorate the official opening of the newly constructed sauna and steam room at the Westsyde Pool & Community Centre (859 Bebek Rd).

The family-friendly event, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm on October 1st, includes a free swim featuring special activities led by City lifeguards, free access to the well-equipped weight room and orientations by a City Fitness Leader, an official opening ceremony followed by cake and refreshments courtesy of the Westsyde Community Development Society, and exciting door prizes.

"The completion of this project fulfills a commitment by Council to re-invest in this facility," says Mayor Peter Milobar. "It creates a legacy that will benefit the well-being of Westsyde residents and the community at large."

The steam room and sauna was designed by Owen & Hunter Architects. The tender was awarded to General Contractor A&T Developments for a contract price of $76,769. The steam room and sauna are each 8x8 ft. in size and finished with cedar (sauna) and tile (steam room). The project included the construction of new shower adjacent to the hot tub.

"These new features really enhance the facility, establishing it as well-rounded, community-based, aquatic and wellness centre," says Glen Cheetham, Aquatics Program Supervisor with the City of Kamloops. Glen adds, "It is a great addition as saunas and steam rooms are very popular for their therapeutic benefits".

This concludes the 3rd and final phase of the Westsyde Pool upgrade project which included the construction of the hot tub and family and care aide change room, installation of new high-efficiency pool boiler and re-painting of structural beams. In addition, there have been improvements to the lobby including enhanced seating, a breakfast bar in the viewing area, improved pro-shop and new healthy vending options. The weight room has been re-organized and received new equipment and a flat screen TV.
