Public Access Defibrillation Training Kicks off NAOSH Week

Kamloops, B.C. - Beginning May 2nd to May 9th, the City of Kamloops will be participating in the North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) week by offering training courses to city employees and the public on proper use of the Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) that have been installed in most of the public facilities.

"The City of Kamloops is on a pursuit to support a 'Cardiac Safe City' initiative," says Heidi Ogilvie, Aquatics Coordinator for the City of Kamloops. "We welcome our employees and citizens to share in this lifesaving mission."

The public training course will take place on Saturday, May 02 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Tournament Capital Centre. The Lifesaving Society's AED-PAD course does not require any previous first aid or CPR training and is designed for the general public and special interest groups (such as coaches) who frequent recreational facilities. This non-certification course teaches participants how to perform adult and child CPR in addition to an orientation of how use an AED unit. The course is free of charge and to register call 250-828-3500 or online at www.kamloops.ca/ezreg. Please quote course number 130932.

During the month of April, the City completed AED Instructor training courses as well started to work with user groups such as the Kamloops Classic Swim Club on the AED program. To date 130 city employees have been trained in AED awareness and the City is looking to increase this number by hosting two additional training courses during NAOSH week.

"NAOSH week presents an excellent opportunity for employees of the City of Kamloops to focus, reinforce and strengthen our commitment to occupational safety and health," says Jennie Inkster, Safety Coordinator for the City of Kamloops. "This year's theme is Safety & Health - A commitment for life: 'Stayin' Safe, Healthy & Alive'."

Participation and involvement in NAOSH week has been shown to: improve attitudes towards safety, increase understanding of the importance of occupational health and safety, foster a safety-minded culture, increase cooperation, raise awareness, assist in team building and improve communication between employees, safety committees and safety professionals.

A couple of local events to look forward to during NAOSH week are a confined space rescue demonstration and high angle rescue demonstration put on by the Kamloops Fire Rescue at the Public Works Centre.
