January 16, 2009 Shovel Ready Projects To Dig Ourselves out of a Recession Kamloops, B.C. - The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) released a list of more than 1,000 nation-wide infrastructure projects that would be ready to go in 2009 if funding is made available. These projects will create over 100,000 jobs across the country. Included on the list are 'shovel ready' or ready to go repair and rehabilitation capital projects for the City of Kamloops. "The list for Kamloops totals approximately $6.95 million in shovel ready projects," said Maurice Gravelle, Asset Management and Capital Projects Manager for the City of Kamloops. "This concept of project funding that the FCM recommends will help stimulate the economy and create employment in an effective and timely manner," added Gravelle. This list containing 25 projects was submitted to the FCM and includes projects such as arterial road rehabilitation, collector and local roads rehabilitation and water main rehabilitation. According to the FCM, what is needed now is for the federal government to get infrastructure dollars moving to projects immediately and make funds available in the January 27th federal budget. In order to counter the recession, a number of projects must be able to begin in 2009. "Kamloops would not only benefit with the creation of new jobs but local spending would increase as well infrastructures being created or repaired will have a long lasting effect within the community," says Mayor Peter Milobar.
