Underwater Archaeology Presentation

Below the surface of British Columbia's lakes, rivers, and coastal waters lies a fascinating history. Shipwrecks, villages, and even a campsite covered by a rising ocean almost 10,000 years ago, provide a rich variety of sites for maritime archaeology.

The Kamloops Museum & Archives is pleased to have Underwater Archaeological Society of BC host a presentation to introduce underwater archaeology, what interesting artifacts they are looking for, and what has been discovered. The UASBC has worked systematically since 1975 to search for, locate, identify, survey, and protect many historic shipwrecks, and other historic resources, for the benefit of future generations including a brief history of paddle wheelers in the area.

About the Society
The UASBC assists archaeologists by undertaking worthwhile projects not currently addressed by professionals. Inventories of shipwrecks and other submerged cultural sites are an especially important contribution. Information about the location, history, and status of these resources is vital to their conservation and management. The British Columbia Archaeology Branch, in particular, needs such data in order to establish site management policy before a user conflict or preservation crisis arises.
